Toccatas, Adagios, and Fugues Organ Recital by Christopher Cockburn
Company: Hilton Arts Festival
JS Bach is generally acknowledged as the greatest composer of music for the pipe organ. One of his most exciting and unusual works for this medium is the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue. Its combination of brilliant virtuosity in the Toccata, lyrical expressiveness in the Adagio, and formal complexity in the Fugue forms the inspiration for this programme. Apart from Bach’s great work, you will hear a selection of other toccatas, adagios and fugues by composers from different times and places, including Beethoven, Reger, Frank Bridge and the 20th-century Belgian composer and organ virtuoso Flor Peeters. This programme of vividly-contrasting colours will be played on the Hilton College chapel organ by Durban-based Christopher Cockburn, one of South Africa’s leading organists. At last year’s Hilton Festival he was organist for the Last Night of the Hilton Proms, and accompanied the Durban Symphonic Choir in Dvorak’s Mass in D.
