Louisiana can credibly claim to being the most musically varied state in the USA. The music of New Orleans, birthplace of jazz, incubator of some of the greatest rock ’n’ roll, cultivator of a highly distinctive form of R&B
and, if not quite home of the blues, then at least one of its preferred domiciles, grabbed its influences from all over the world but in fact only forms part of the state’s musical story. Just a couple of hours away by car, the prairies and bayous of south-west Louisiana are teeming with some of the most vibrant roots music to be found anywhere, mainly in the form of Cajun music, swamp pop and zydeco. We’ll cover all of this and possibly more, all the way from Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Jelly Roll Morton and Amédé Ardoin, via the piano professors and Fats Domino,
Dr John and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, to Leyla McCalla and Jourdan Thibodeaux et Les Rodailleurs.
