The programme includes Brel’s passionately haunting songs, but also excerpts from his brilliant writings which showcase his unique look on life. These Brel songs bear testimony to the amazing ambit work of the greatest chansonnier of the 20th century.
Jannie has established himself as exponent of Brel chansons since the late eighties. His first performances of Brel was in Hillbrow, in the cabaret Van Berlyn tot Bapsfontein (1988) with Laurika Rauch. Two Brel songs – Madeleine and Liefde van Later – became trademarks of Jannie’s shows during the nineties and lately his renditions of some original French versions – La Valse and Il Neige sur Liège – also met with high
acclaim from critics.
“Du Toit is superb, with the gravitas and vocal power to do the songs justice” – Lesley Stones (Daily Maverick)
