A Beethoven Marathon
Company: Hilton Arts Festival
Two of South Africa’s most eminent musicians, cellist Aristide du Plessis and pianist Andrew Warburton, team up to perform Beethoven’s last three sonatas for cello and piano. The great composer wrote works
for this combination throughout his life, but the last three sonatas are generally reckoned to be the pinnacle of his achievement, and contain some of his most brilliant virtuoso writing for both instruments, as well as his most intimate thoughts in the slower movements. Aristide has performed extensively in Europe and with all the South African orchestras and returned to South Africa a few years ago to take up the co-principal cello position with the KZNPO. Andrew has 47 years of performance experience, both in South Africa, with all the orchestras here, and abroad. He recently graduated with a PhD in piano performance at UKZN.
