Diane Erasmus, Traci Tomkins and Coral Spencer will be exhibiting in the History Room.

DIANE ERASMUS

This is Diane's twelfth year exhibiting at Hilton Arts Festival.

Drawing her inspiration from the beauty of the natural world, Diane Erasmus has acquired a reputation as a sensitive and highly original artist.

Her vivid and inventive landscapes and water scenes are imbued with a profoundly spiritual awareness, yet remain grounded in those elements which define a great work of art. She prefers to work from life and travels extensivly to glean new material.  Her recent trip to India inspired her new work "Impressions of people of India", which she will be exhibiting at Hilton this year.

TRACI TOMPKINS

Traci Tompkins trained in Theatre Crafts and Performing Arts before a well loved career in media. But it was clay that was to become her passion, when she set up her first full time pottery studio in Hilton in the mid ‘90’s.  A decade of successful selling exhibitions and solo showings followed, becoming well known for her statement hand coiled smoke fired urns and raku fired vessels.Today Trayci balances this individuality as a maker with her commercial studio range and vibrant retail outlet, Zulu-lulu ceramic boutique, set in the heart of the Midlands Meander. ‘Clay allows me the canvas to put my thoughts into stories as they play out in my head…. My training in theatre, mime and dance has influenced how I teach and design, and what I choose to make – it’s a personal signature of expression “.

CORAL SPENCER DOMIJAN

My earliest influences were classical, having been introduced to plaster casts of Roman Classical sculpture in the basement of Glasgow School of art when I was a child. This being significant, because it was the light that fell on these huge piles of human form that intrigued me the most.  My large complex paintings of people on beaches are reminiscent of the huge murals on these walls and although these murals were naïve in style, without light, they were busy, and I enjoyed the collective distraction of the work.I paint light on form and have a keen regard for what I call high skill. My interest in body language and relationships can be seen in my figure placement and conceptual work which explores the body and its relationship to itself and others. With this said, it is sometimes this very compromise that pushes me forward and feeds my work. My subject matter is voyeuristic in nature, the idea of the hunt being part of the journey is what drives me. My love of form allows me to exercise my need to perfect skill and understand skin and the play of light on skin. A genuine interest in the human condition, fear of it and love of it fuels my need to explore it more and unwrap it in my work. Time passing and the implications of this on the body and the mind are a source of interest. As of the other side to my art, the painting of the beaches, “The great watering holes in life.” These works tell the same story, just in plain English.

AYNSLEY HERBERT

I am an artist using wooden panels which I carve and add metal items as part of the design. I exhibit my work at my wife’s gallery “Art on Victoria” and have exhibited in the Cape as well. These are painted white but, depending on the piece, I sometimes leave them as natural wood.

VERONICA HERBERT

Veronica Herbert is a professional artist who draws inspiration from the natural world. She paints landscapes in oil on canvas, capturing mood and atmosphere in her skies. The ever changing colours of the sky at various times of the day and depicting different seasons are a favourite theme for her paintings. She enjoys using palette knife to create broad impressions of sky and cloud. She also specializes in detailed bird studies on hand made paper. In order to portray the accurate details of the birds,  she works in watercolour using very fine brushes.   Her work is on permanent display at her gallery “Art on Victoria” in Pietermaritzburg, where she also exhibits many ceramic artists works as well as several other well known artists.

When Hermien Coleman-Spies left the Midlands to relocate with her family to Nigeria, 5 of her original group who had become friends decided to continue to paint together and so formed The Giverny Art Group. There are no structured classes, all the members are very diverse, working in different media, from abstracts, portraits, colorful flowers, delicate water colors, using oils, mixed media, chalks and charcoal. The camaraderie and support for each other has led to an amazing creativity within the group, made up of the following Midlands artists: Cristina Richardson, Vicky Cressy, Louise Dunning, Margeret Bretchke, Carolyn Goble, Marion Lowe, Gael Worrall, Cindy Powell, Diane Aldworth, Val Tasker, Wendy Thomson and Bea Wucherphennig.

We have been working together since 2005 creating unique works of art on canvas. Each and every piece we produce is worked on by both of us simultaneously. This, combined with a wide range of mixed media (acrylic, oil, enamel, charcoal and pastel, to name a few) and a vast array of varied subject matter, is what differentiates our style. We are able to create an exciting contemporary feel that changes and adapts to suit any environment - from a home, to a hotel, to an office. Our continuous experimentation results in wonderful variations, and an ever evolving style! We specialise in reading the space in which the artwork is required and producing a piece unique in colour, texture, subject and size.”   www.artahha.co.za

We don’t choose paintings, they choose us !

JULIA FORMAN

forman_Feathered_FriendsI have been painting and exploring the wonderful world of colour and form for the past 15 years. The medium I choose for a painting is dictated by my mood and the subject I am working on. Sometimes I really need to feel as if I am sculpting the subject, so oils and oils sticks are the choice. At other times the freedom  and  spontaneity of inks is the order of the day….the inks taking the lead in the creative process. The constant – my love of strong contrasts is always there, no matter what the chosen medium.

But wait...let’s start at the beginning. What is it that catches my attention and demands to be eternalised  on canvas or paper? LIFE!

SHARLEEN BOADEN

boaden

Sharleen Boaden creates impressionistic paintings that reflect her observations and interpretation of various aspects of everyday life.

From a young age, Sharleen has been drawn to the genres of art and literature and her poems have been featured in three editions of poetry compilations by the Poetry Institute of Africa.  Her paintings have been showcased in many exhibitions and festivals.  In 2010 and 2011, she was included in the top twenty selling artists at Pietermaritzburg’s Art in the Park.  Her work is represented in selected galleries in South Africa and her paintings can be found in both local and overseas private collections.

Sharleen puts herself – the poetry of who she is – into her art.  Her work evokes an emotional connection between the painting and its viewer.

Sharleen paints from her home studio in Durban, South Africa.

The rich tones of Clarens sandstone cliffs and the wonderful Midlands autumn landscape are both integral to Simon & Lyn’s paintings and their soul.

Simon prefers working in acrylic on board or canvas, experimenting with texture and technique. His landscapes investigate the drama of change, whether by fire, flood, or the ravages of time. His humour surfaces in a variety of cabernet soaked characters enduring various trials in pursuit of their favourite beverage.  He has completed many commissions of farmhouses and personalized 'Cabernet Portraits'.

Lyn’s gorgeous oil on canvas paintings of flower studies & kelims with gold leaf adorn many homes. Her strong treatment of the subject matter, use of colour and brushstroke is reminiscent of the work of Irma Stern.  The symbolic canvasses where fragmented imagery reflects her life experience of home, family and surroundings are a more personal glimpse. While still keeping their gallery in Clarens, Simon & Lyn are happily back in the Midlands. They have been settling in this year and are planning to make their work more accessible to the KZN market again. They can be contacted on 083 259 0934;   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Southern Drakensberg Art Society was born of noble stock! Our weekly workshops produced such a  variety of excellent art work from the 10 / 16  active members,  that we decided to open an Art Gallery. This we did on Pucketty Farm, a well known venue in the Underberg district. We  pride ourselves with a very successful and affordable exhibition which is regularly changed, and boosted by the increasingly popular "Art in the Avenue", an outdoor exhibition. This takes place three times  a year and is enthusiastically  supported from far and wide by art lovers and patrons.  We all look forward with great excitement, to our first inclusion in this festival. Active members incluce: Timothy van Vuuren, Rob Leanhouwers, Liz Campbell,  John Moat, Sheila Gilson, Serena Shaw, Kirsty Turmer,  Pamela Pattison-Bacon, Margie Corlet, Beth Fey, Rob Topman, Phil Palframan, Stooks Wilton, Angela Butcher, Ann Weaver and Jenny Rennie.

reidWe have always been artistic and both did art till the last year of school, landing up in the same Interior Design course at Natal Technikon. Vince entered into the design and construction of show stands and the exhibition world and I designed wrought iron furniture. We got married in 1995 in Zimbabwe and started our own Exhibition and Wrought iron design company. We moved to Durban in 2003 and in 2007 opened our own business again doing the same thing. We missed drawing and painting as life got too busy and stressed over those seven years. We have recently moved to lovely Howick, for a change of lifestyle and pace. We have taken up art again and loving it and want to be successful at it.We love photography and have captured all the images for our paintings and drawings, ourselves (friends help out with some subject matter, sometimes). We love to be inspired by God’s Creation all around us… from a tiny dew drop on a beautiful flower to a huge African elephant! Our styles are different but complimentary. We are versatile in a variety of mediums. Our work speaks for itself

A professional equine photographer and glass artist, John has over the past 10 years explored the age old techniques of glass slumping and fusing. In this process, dating back as far as 2000BC, layers of glass are fused and slumped into formers in a kiln.Working from his studio in Kloof, John produces a wide range of artistic as well as functional glassware ranging from jewellery to bowls, servers and massive decorative glass panels. His current work is taking the emphasis outdoors with experiments in sculptural garden art and water features.

A regular exhibitor at exhibitions and festivals, John’s work has found its way into homes in the four corners of the globe with recent commissions from as far afield as the UK and Australia. His home based studio and   gallery are housed in old stone stables where visitors are always welcome to browse and watch him at work, whilst his glass can also be found in selected galleries nationally.

Harry is drawn to the South African landscape and is fascinated by the shapes of things he finds - whether they are natural or man-made.

“Often natural objects will look out of place in the landscape, while man-made structures can fit seamlessly into the scene. Mountains breaking the horizon may look like misplaced monuments; some buildings seem to have grown where they stand, and things we discard or abandon are absorbed into the landscape.”

These elements, together with a keen eye and a sense of humour, combine in his paintings and photographs revealing the quirks that make South Africa unique.

Born in Newcastle in 1965, grew up in Howick, KZN Midlands,  and currently living in Westville, KZN. Having had a passion for Art ever since I can remember, I have always taken part in some form of art making, and my first oil painting was done when I was 12 years old. Although I chose a career in Architecture and Interior Design I continued my passion for all things artistic. I started selling my art in 2005 and finally in 2010 started enjoying work as a full time artist.I am deeply inspired by my travels around Africa: the vibrant colours and imagery, the chaotic atmosphere and warmth, and the vast open spaces. My work is primarily representative, but imbued with my own sensitivity to colour, emotion, nostalgia and atmosphere. Continuously learning from other artists, I am inspired by the light and ethereal quality of the paintings of Turner, the atmosphere and mystery of James Whistler and the colour and raw emotion of Van Gogh.

Born in Durban and brought up on a farm in Zululand by parents with a love and passion for the vibrancy of our beautiful country, wildlife, vast open spaces and rainbow nation.

“I studied Graphic Art at the University of Stellenbosch where I completed my degree at the end of 1986. I worked in the commercial art sector for 15 years. For the last 5 years I have been concentrating and enjoying the freedom of fine art! The joy of movement, harmony of colour and composition as well as different media and subject matter is so exciting. This has inspired me to paint in oils, acrylic and a bit of mixed media, I hope to bring happiness  and a calm feeling of content to the viewer.

Am passionate about painting donkeys and contribute 10% of earnings from my paintings to ESELTJIESRUS – a donkey sanctuary in McGregor, Western Cape, which offers a permanent home for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys.  To learn more and adopt-a-donkey visit their website www.donkeysanctuary.co.za

LIFE IS THEATRE AND THEATRE IS LIFE

I started making ceramic theatre masks years ago as a result of my fascination with the theatre and because I see masks in a sense as a commentary on life and the human condition. Life is theatre and theatre is life! Being creative is a way of life for me and by working with clay I experience a sense of fulfilment when I express myself in this organic medium.  I have expanded my creations to include ceramic heads and sculptures and, as I have a passion to  express feelings, moods and facial expressions, I tried to capture some of these emotions in my work. My passion for music and the Cinema Nouveau, has always inspired me and provided me with new themes and topics for my work.Working with clay is my life, my world.

Favouring a subtle palette, Nicki’s paintings portray a sense of serenity and contentment. Many of her references are photographs taken on family holidays in the Transkei and Mozambique – beautiful destinations which many of us can relate to. She is known for capturing languid Nguni cattle on unspoiled Transkei beaches, fishermen and women gathering their daily fare, idiosyncratic country landscapes and flowers. Over the past few months, Nicki has enjoyed painting aloes in full bloom and a personal favourite, proteas.
